1 LIDO HISTORY PIONEERS
A 100 Years Ago Zvi Gross arrived in the Holy Land from Russia. On land that had been purchased, he his wife and five other families established a small farming community called Mitzpe (Viewpoint) on a windy, thorny hilltop overlooking the Sea of Galilee. In Those Days Jewish settlers were few and the isolated homesteads had to protect themselves from hostile marauders. Zvi Gross, was a member of the legendary group of mounted Shomrim (Gaurdsmen) who roamed the Hills of Galilee on horseback to guard the fledgling farming settlements of the area. Wagon Driver: A difficult and impoverished existence was provided by farming some cows, chickens, vegetables and olives. To survive Zvi Gross went to work as a transporter of people and goods by horse and cart. From Mitzpe he traveled as far north as Damascus and south to Gaza carrying girding and building materials for the Palestine/Syrian railroad that the Turks were constructing at the time. |
